Urban Farming - A Future for All? Detroit picks up steam as it were
Across the Strait, the land returned to agriculture. Furrows are cultivated, fertilized soil and crops planted and harvested. As in any other city in the world, urban agriculture has taken root in Detroit, not just as a hobby or a sideline, but in the context of a model of revitalization of a large city. Some farms are the product of individualistic Hardy or community groups, non-profit. Others, like Hantz farms are supported by millions of dollars and aim to create the world's largest urban farm right in the middle of the city.
Mark Covington, 38, is one of the pioneers of the 21st century, but he tripped on his role, almost by accident. Being unemployed after losing his job as an environmental engineer and lives with his mother back two years ago, he began to bring order to a vacant lot near his home in Georgia Street , planting vegetables and allow local people to harvest free. An orchard of fruit trees followed, and a community center - by converting a pair of empty buildings - which keeps local youngsters from the street.
