Congressmen call for Inspector General Probe of St. Louis VA Medical Center

Angered by the failure of security at the John A. Cochran medical center, a bi-partisan group of legislators on Wednesday called for Infectious Disease thousands Veterans Administration, the Inspector General to investigate failures that may have incurred.

A letter signed by seven members of the area of Missouri and Illinois congressional delegation insisted on a full investigation "into this unjustifiable violation of standard operating procedure."

The request comes amid ongoing criticism of how the hospital and the downtown VA responded to problems in his dental office may be exposed to veterans with hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV infection.

In March, a routine inspection revealed that the procedures for cleaning dental equipment has not been followed for 13 months. A detergent is supposed to be used for cleaning instruments prior to sterilization. The instruments have been cleaned, but no cleaner has been used.
